Try using Gold Bond medicated cream. That numbs the itching and heals the skin. Other than that, let the doctor prescribe a cream. Additionally, tell him to take cool baths (hot water dries out skin), use Aveeno brand or Dove brand soaps (most mild and most moisturizing), and to NOT scratch.
