Is there a significant difference between topical creams, gels, and ointments?

I vaguely remember reading about they differ in absorption, as well as with the amount of liquid it is made of.Is there a significant difference between topical creams, gels, and ointments?
Yes, you are correct. As far as I know, a cream contains an aqueous medium, so it can be applied on areas of skin where a fluid surafce is exposed. An oinment has an oil base, so to apply on intact skin. This is what I think you want to know. Not sure about the gel. Hope I helped
